Pre-Columbian, Dominican Republic, Taino of Ciboney peoples, ca. 600 to 1500 years old. A beautiful ceremonial hand axe known as a celt, hand-carved from a mottled forest-green stone (jadeite) with darker brown lines. This Celt was found in the surrounding mountains of El Valle Hato Mayor Providence in the Dominican Republic.
The smoothly polished surface & finely tapered teardrop form of this petaloid stone indicates it was intended as a ceremonial object. the term petaloid refers to the elongated flower petal like shape.
