Stony-Iron Meteorites: A Rare Cosmic Treasure
Stony-Iron meteorites are a fascinating and rare type of meteorite composed of nearly equal parts metal (usually iron-nickel) and silicate minerals (like olivine). These unique space rocks provide valuable insight into the structure of differentiated asteroids, believed to have formed in the early solar system over 4.5 billion years ago.
How Stony-Iron Meteorites Are Formed
Stony-Iron meteorites are thought to originate from the boundary zone between the metallic core and the silicate mantle of large asteroids. When these parent bodies experienced catastrophic collisions in space, fragments were ejected into orbit. Over millions of years, some of these fragments made their way toward Earth.
How They Reach Earth
As these space rocks travel through the solar system, gravity—particularly from planets like Jupiter—can alter their paths, eventually pulling them into Earth’s atmosphere. Upon entering the atmosphere, they become meteors, heating up and slowing down due to friction. If they survive the fiery descent and land on Earth’s surface, they are classified as meteorites—and in this case, as Stony-Iron meteorites.
Types of Stony-Iron Meteorites
There are two main subtypes:
Pallasites: Contain olivine crystals in a metal matrix; often considered the most beautiful meteorites.
Mesosiderites: A brecciated mix of silicate and metal, formed by impact events.
